Tubifex, also called the sludge worm, or sewage worm, is a species of tubificid segmented worm that inhabits the sediments of lakes and rivers on several continents. Tubifex can be easily cultured in containers with to mm thick pond mud at the bottom, blended with decaying vegetable matter and masses of bran and bread.

Continuous, mild water flow is to be maintained in the container, with a suitable drainage system. After the arrangement of the system, the container is inoculated with Tubifex worms. Within 15 days, clusters of worms develop and can be removed with mud in masses.

The best bits...

When worms come to the surface due to lack of oxygen, they are collected and washed under brisk stream of water to remove residual mud attached to their bodies. It is very readily taken by all of them. Feeding live Tubifex to your aquatic animals you will find them much healthier maintaining their true colours. It's recommended to mix them with other live foods to make a varied diet for your fish.

Thanks for Shopping!

Fish love the taste of Tubifex — even the pickiest eaters. This is probably a favourite food of Discus fish.

When placing them in your live Tubifex keeper or other containers make sure that your worms are no thicker than 1 cm. Keep a low 2 — 3 cm level of cool fresh water above them without covering their container since they need to be able to breathe. To keep your worms fresh they should be rinsed at least once a day. Use only chemical free pre-chilled water at the same temperature you keep them in when rinsing. Do not use aquarium or room temperature water. You do not have to feed your Tubifex if you don't intend to breed them. Uneaten worms will not foul your aquarium, but do feed according to your aquatic animals and aquarium size.
